A New Moon Rises.



  • Non-native to Nihen. They were not created by the gods, and thus are a lot less beholden to their rules, as well.
  • However, this also means that magic tends to have a much more intense effect on their bodies. Humans have to be a lot more careful about the whole "emotions influence your magic's strength and control" thing.
  • There are some groups of humans who eschew magic altogether, descended from unwilling transplanted humans. These humans call themselves the Forgotten.
    • Forgotten live in heavily isolated communities and are actually fairly hostile to non-humans.
    • They also prohibit the use of magic and see magic-wielding humans as "abandoning their humanity altogether".
  • They're known for their tenacity. Humans can find a way to thrive in any environment.


  • Slender and flexible. Elves tend to use this to squeeze into places other races can't.
  • Nihenese elves are cold-blooded! Their buildings actually have more of an "open" design to better allow sunlight in since they can become sluggish and tired when they're cold.
    • This is why water-aligned and soul-aligned elves and their kin tend to be an uncommon sight--both elements tend to have a negative impact on one's body heat.
  • Elves are known for their perceptiveness and generally good spatial awareness. This makes them excellent hunters, as well as masters of teleportation magics.
  • Can have children with other races--whether or not an elf recognizes a half-elf/quarter-elf/etc as kin varies.


  • Nihenese dwarves are stout and hardy, with a strong, stocky build being considered the height of attractiveness.
  • Have tougher bodies because they are "born of stone"--dwarves are born when another dwarf takes a piece of a magical stone known as a Heartstone and takes it into their body. This is functionally similar to conception and pregnancy in non-dwarven races.
    • Every dwarven city has its own source for Heartstones, and Heartstones are heavily protected even in times of peace, since a Heartstone is what allows a dwarven society to live and grow.
  • Dwarven skin tends to look like polished gemstones, and as such dwarves are literally a very colorful people.
  • Dwarves keep highly detailed archives of knowledge, making them perhaps the keepers of the most well-preserved and ancient records of history.
  • Dwarves can have children with other races, but culturally those mixed-race offspring will never be considered dwarves, since they lack a Heartstone.
  • Dwarves most frequently worship the gods Nomish(earth), Aurum(metal), and Diore(forge), and as such tend to view dwarves whose magic aligns to those gods more favorably in society.


  • Endracot are people blessed with the power to change between the forms of both man and animal. The “Man-like” forms of Endracot can range from having a lot of animal-like features to almost none at all. No one has yet to figure out if there is any sort of rhyme or reason to why this is, as more humanoid endra and more beast-like endra are functionally identical in every way except looks.
  • The singular form is “endra”, with “endracot” referring to a group.
  • Endracot are the favored people of the god of beasts and hunters, Silvaber.
  • Endracot tend to live in groups of similar animal forms. Bird endra, feline endra, etc.
    • However, in recent times it has become more and more common to see Endracot villages made up of multiple kinds of Endra. This is likely in response to their long history of mistreatment by non-Endra societies.
  • An endra can have children with members of other races. If the child inherits endra shapeshifting, they are considered an endra, but if they don't then they are considered the same race as their non-endra parent.


  • Merfolk-like beings who live in any body of water and are thus adapted to it with things like gills, scales, fins, etc.
  • Syrin only have one gender but they'll use any variety of pronouns for themselves when talking to the "Landfolk". Some Syrin don't use pronouns at all!
  • "Northern" Syrin tend to have more plain scale colors and bigger bodies that retain heat better.
  • "Southern" Syrin tend to be more colorful like tropical fish.
  • Legend states that they are the children of the goddess of water and the goddess of the moon.
  • There are no confirmed recordings of a Syrin having children with other races, with most legends being dismissed as apocryphal.


  • Reincarnations of devotees of the god of plants, Quercus.
  • Quericu appear as plant-like beings. Bark-like skin, leaves and petals for “hair” and “clothes”, etc.
  • They are bound to the World Tree, which is said to be Quercus's earthly incarnation and a massive oak tree at the heart of Mystraveil Forest.
  • Not every plant mage becomes a Quericu, but there are particularly devoted groups who see becoming a Quericu as the end goal of their faith.
  • Quericu have perfect memory of their previous lives, as the nature of their transformation skips directly past the cleansing that souls undergo when they meet the goddess of death.


  • Clockwork robots who are powered by souls that were sealed into their bodies and gained sentience through those very same souls.
  • Automatons were originally created to be soldiers and servants before their souls "awakened" and they began to seek out their own purposes.
  • Some have residual memories of the person whom their soul once belonged to. Others do not. This is due to the fickle nature of unattended souls.
  • Automatons mostly live in isolation on the Clockwork Isle for fear of being forced back into their unawakened purposes, though they have pleasant relations with the Syrin and with a small alliance of sailors.


  • Not native to Nihen.
  • Sometimes called “angels”, but have none of the divinity we’d associate with the term.
    • They have wings (often multiple pairs, allowing them to be distinguished from bird endra), and their ears are long and feathered. Vivid and unusual hair colors are very common among them.
  • Their magic lacks power by itself, but they can charge it up by feeding on the emotions of others.
    • Emotions drained by Elysians are not permanently lost! Rather, the process of draining emotions tends to leave an Elysian's victim in a temporary state of absolute calmness.
  • Elysians are known to wear masks to conceal their faces and facial expressions. It's rumored that Elysian society forbids them from removing these masks around non-Elysians.
  • They've been at war with Ribyss for millenia.
  • Elysians can have children with Nihenese races, though the resulting half-Elysian offspring will be seen as a cursed child by Nihenese people and an abomination by other Elysians.
    • Rumor has it that Elysians can have children with Ribyssians, too, though no such child is known to exist at present.


  • Not native to Nihen.
  • Sometimes called “demons”, but they aren't strictly opposed to divinity.
    • They have horns, fangs, and tails. Their skin colors range in all sorts of technicolor options, much like the hair and eye colors of Elysians.
  • Unlike most Nihenese magic users, Ribyssians don't have to control their emotions to retain control over their magic.
  • Ribyssians have the power to amplify the emotions of others around them. Some do so to stir up chaos, though others may use it to sway people under their command.
  • They've been at war with Elysia for millenia.
  • Ribyssians can have children with Nihenese races, though these offspring will often experience the same stigmas that half-Elysians do.
